Today, breakthroughs in materials science are changing how we think about well completions and, potentially, well designs. This session showcased  recent breakthroughs in nanotechnology and the development of an ultra-strong, lightweight alloy that are both driving step-change performance in unconventional completions. Enhanced Recovery: An Unconventional Approach to Tight Oil EOR.

Primary depletion using horizontal wells with multistage fracturing only produces a low percentage of the available oil in shale reservoirs. The question on how to improve the recovery factor in unconventional shale reservoirs and produce more of the remaining oil was the focus in this session. Optimizing recovery factor, and offsetting rapid decline rates, is intuitively important in a low oil price environments.  Costly drilling, fracturing and completion have to be optimized and the drive for efficient use of capital resources is paramount and imperative to maintain the  competitive development costs of unconventional resources.


Gas injection is well known to be a highly feasible enhanced oil recovery method. Cyclic gas injection (huff-n-puff) to improve oil recovery in shale oil reservoirs uses a multi pronged approach to optimize recovery. Initially a simulation phase shows that cyclic gas injection has the highest potential to enhance oil recovery (EOR) in shale oil reservoirs.  Subsequent optimization and control of huff-n-puff is also critically important. 


This session expanded on innovative solutions that aim to optimize traditional huff-n-puff gas injection operations and provide solutions that support the optimization of core project components from site selection to post analysis. The principle objective of this session was highlighting key resolutions aimed at enhancing ultimate recovery for North American shale oil reservoirs.

Getting under the surface: Combining in-bit and surface data with well modeling to re-imagine drilling optimization.

In recent years, it has become clear that analyzing surface data alone will never achieve the level of drilling optimization our customers are seeking. However, recent advancements in electronics have allowed us to reliably capture detailed downhole measurements--both at the bit and in the drill string. Underground Gas storage remains a vital segment of the Gas Value Chain, bridging supply and demand,  with forecasted investments between $20 to $30B in the next 5 years. 
As the demand for Underground Gas Storage shifts to new geographies driven by gas as the transition fuel into the next decades low carbon production ecosystem,  Operators and Developers are facing new challenges and opportunities to reduce TOTEX and optimize return from storage facilities.

Pushing the envelope: How technology integration and remote management are redefining drilling efficiency, consistency, and performance.

The first well drilled in the Marcellus shale took 60 days to complete. This year, we finish drilling the vast majority of our customers long, horizontal in less than two weeks. In this talk, we examined how a holistic drilling approach and remote operations combined to drill more than 200 of these wells at speeds exceeding a mile a day and how one recent well saw 1.7 miles of footage drilled in a single, 24-hour period.

In this interactive session, we explored how a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is an efficient and clean solution to generate electric power and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source.   
The BHGE team was joined by industrial operators and members of cogeneration associations, and discussed with the audience new CHP economic and regulatory trends. The team also addressed how to increase energy efficiency and enhance energy infrastructure, while minimizing operating costs by adopting innovative financing formulas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to the adoption of greener fuels like hydrogen.

In this technical seminar BHGE and Yokogawa presented a joint value story on how providing long term predictive valve diagnostics through the DCS control system helps end users maintain and optimize plant performance and uptime.
This follows the announcement of our 2018 joint partnership, integrating BHGE’s advanced diagnostic and anomaly detection platform with Yokogawa’s Centum system. This alliance  enhances our customers’ main control systems to not only run their entire plant but also enable long term prediction capabilities for valve wear and failure.
